What Crew Finance is
Crew is a checking account built around "pockets", which work like digital envelopes. You create pockets for goals and expenses, and fund them automatically. Crew describes pointing "15% to retirement, $50 to a rainy-day fund, and whatever is left to a dream vacation without having to login each time"[1]. It pays 2.95% APY[1]. Crew is not itself a bank. Banking services are provided by Bangor Savings Bank, Member FDIC[1]. There is no subscription[1]. It ships on iOS[2] and Android[3].

The actual difference
Crew has to hold your money to work. Only the company that issued your card can decline it. So using Crew means opening an account there and moving your direct deposit[1]. DivvyUpp just reads the bank you already have. That lets it do a different job. It answers the question before you buy, instead of reacting when you pay. That is what "Can I Spend?", fixed versus flexible, and balance change detection are for. None of them ask you to switch banks or sort your money into pockets.
What DivvyUpp offers
Verified plan, based on your bank data.See your safe-to-spend number even before you connect your bank. What do you earn? What do your bills cost? What do you want to save? That is enough to get started. DivvyUpp then checks each answer against your bank and lets you verify your plan before locking it in. (You can edit your plan any time from your profile.)
Safe-to-spend number. The home screen answers one question. What is safe to spend right now, once your bills and your savings goal are set aside? You get that figure for today, for this week and for this month. It updates itself as transactions arrive.
"Can I Spend?" advisor.Type in an amount and DivvyUpp tells you whether it fits your flexible spending for today, this week and this month. Where it does not fit, DivvyUpp shows what that costs you. What it does to your checking balance, whether it puts your savings goal at risk, and which upcoming bills are at stake. Then it answers safe, caution or over.
Saving streak.Spend less than your daily amount and DivvyUpp sets the difference aside. A good week turns into a specific amount to move, checked against your real savings balance.
Automatic fixed versus flexible categorization.Bills like your mortgage, utilities and subscriptions cost roughly the same every month. Those are categorized apart from the spending that varies with your own choices. If a label is wrong, fix it for that one payment or for that store from now on.Crew asks you to create and fund pockets yourself[1].
Automatic balance change detection and itemization.A bank can take a day or two to post a card tap, and until then most spending numbers read too high. DivvyUpp watches your balance instead. An unexplained drop is counted as pending spending straight away. You can itemize it yourself as fixed or flexible. Itemized spending is matched up later, when your bank posts those transactions.
Insights from spending patterns.Repeat spending you may not have noticed, and the days you spend more. Each one shows what it would be worth per month, set next to your savings goal.
Health View, the periodic step back.A slower look at how much of your pay you are keeping. It compares this period with a typical one for you. It names the stores behind a change. And it only flags what is big enough to matter at what you earn.
What Crew Finance does well
It can decline a purchase as it happens.Crew says it "offers tools within the actual authorization flow that can decline unwanted transactions"[1]. Only the company that issued the card can do that.
Your money earns while it sits there.Crew pays 2.95% APY, with FDIC insurance through Bangor Savings Bank, and charges no subscription[1].
Pockets are a proven model.Crew builds the whole account around them[1]. If you already think in envelopes, having them inside the account is the tidiest version of it.
